Locator Help

Check this page for help with using the Locator.

The Idea of the Site?

The number and variety of technologies is growing every day and though experience is by no means the only source of learning, exchange among practitioners can be helpful in finding our way. It requires, first, that we start making experience accessible and second, to actively support exchange. The site offers an exchange platform for both.

What is Required?

For a first time visitor the site may require some time to get familiar with its functions. After logging in you can start working with the Locator. It enables access to content other visitors put there or for you to add some yourself. To make sure all this is a sound spending of time you might check the information on this page. It will certainly help to ensure the benefits of exchanging your experience and to expand your and eventually all our knowledge.

What is the Locator?

The Locator is the application that enables the exchange of knowledge and experience. It provides a fast and simple way to select the area of knowledge that you are interested in, and it takes you directly to those pages that contain the relevant documents.

To select the area of interest that is relevant to you, you must choose a Category and a Condition. The combination of these two choices gives access to the relevant documents. Categories are areas of technological change such as 'Knowledge Management Basics', 'Solution Development' and 'Service Development'. Conditions are sets of circumstances that critically determine the outcome of the proposed behaviour, for example circumstances that condition both the determination of purpose and the means to achieve it. Examples of conditions are 'Business Environment', 'Role of Knowledge Worker' and 'Knowledge Organization'.

For a description of the different main categories and conditions, click here.

How to use the Locator?

Above is a picture of the locator. This picture is for explanation purposes only.

The Locator enables easy selection of the required categories and conditions. To select the desired category, move your mouse over the 'Category' tekst and click once. The different possible categories will appear to the right of the Category option. Each click will force you to determine what category best suits the area of expertise that you are interested in, as each time you will specify the area of interest in increased detail. The category list is presented as a hierarchial tree of categories in increasing detail. After just a few clicks, you will have selected the relevant category. The category list will disappear, and the full path to the selected category will appear on the screen (in the Category field).

Apply the same steps to the selection of the Conditions. Once this is completed, you will have selected the category and condition you are interested in. The combination of these two interests determine what documents instantly become accessible to you. To see the list of documents, click on the 'GO' button.

You will be presented with a screen that has a complete list of all applicable documents. The subject shows what this document is about, it gives information on who added the document and how many comments have been added to this document. There is no charge to request this list of documents. However, when accessing a relevant document, your credit balance will be decreased.

Besides reading the found documents, you can always go back one step, add a New Addition, order credits, view your history or find adjecent categories. This can be done by simply clicking on the relevant button above the document list.
